This listing is for a very unique, hand-made sterling silver pendant, designed for Civil War relic hunters, metal detecting enthusiasts and history buffs in-general. My name is Leonard Short and I have combined my two careers of goldsmith/jewelry designer and artifact restoration to create a line of metal detecting jewelry. This pendant is a precision replica, modeled from a very scarce Union, California State Seal Militia button (Alberts CF1 / Tice CF001) that was worn during the American Civil War by California troops, as the subject! This pendant is NOT an actual Civil-War period artifact!! The California troops that wore these style buttons on their uniform were active during the Civil War but there were few of them. 
This particular style of California State Seal button was one of only two die patterns that represented the State of California during the Civil War. They were manufactured by the Scovill Button Manufacturing Company in Waterbury, Connecticut. The button's State Seal design was adopted in 1849 - just before California was admitted as the 31st State in 1850. The State Seal design incorporates the Roman goddess Minerva, who was born fully grown from Jupiter's head. She has her left arm resting on a shield and is grasping a spear with her right hand. The usage of Minerva symbolizes California attaining Statehood without the normal process of becoming a territory. Also incorporated are images of a bear, a sheaf of wheat and grapes (symbolizing agriculture in California), a miner & boat ( representing mining and commerce) as well as mountainous terrain and vegetation indicative of California. The design is superimposed on a lined background and on the upper perimeter of the button's front is the word "EUREKA", meaning: "I have found it". 
All details of this button's design are sharp and crisp in the execution of the silver pendant replica. The bail on this pendant is uniquely crafted with long-term wear in mind. It has an opening that measures 3mm x 6mm in order to accommodate a very substantial chain. In addition, the bail has my signature, hinge mechanism.
