This listing is for a very unique, hand-made pendant, designed for Civil War relic hunters, metal detecting enthusiasts and history buffs in-general. My name is Leonard Short and I have combined my two careers of goldsmith/jewelry designer and artifact restoration to create a line of metal detecting jewelry. This pendant is a precision replica, modeled from a Confederate, local-made Louisiana State Seal button (Alberts LA11 / Tice LA260) that was worn during the American Civil War by Louisiana troops, as the subject! This pendant is NOT an actual Civil-War period artifact!! This particular style of Louisiana State seal button is one of the most rare of all the Louisiana Confederate buttons. It is my belief that the LA11 buttons were manufactured in small quantity, strictly for use on officers' uniforms. My reasoning for this is the fact that examples of the buttons are so incredibly rare and also, the fronts were gold plated and the backs were silver-plated. The beautiful design incorporates a mother pelican with her head turned to the right, feeding her four baby Pelicans. The design lies on a lined background, surrounded by a rope border and a solid, concentric outer border. The buttons are believed to have been made by either Casimir Rouyer, (A French immigrant to New Orleans that was a jeweler and silversmith ) or the firm of Bellenot and Ulrich, also located in New Orleans. The original button fronts were stamped from a very thin-gauge brass with a heavier gauge, separate back. The design on this button replica is strong so that all elements of the design can be seen. The bail on this pendant is uniquely crafted with long-term wear in mind. It has an opening that measures 3mm x 6mm in order to accommodate a very substantial chain. In addition, the bail has my signature, hinge mechanism.
