This listing is for a very unique, hand-made sterling silver pendant, designed for Civil War relic hunters, metal detecting enthusiasts and history buffs in-general. My name is Leonard Short and I have combined my two careers of goldsmith/jewelry designer and artifact restoration to create a line of metal detecting jewelry. This pendant is a precision replica, modeled from an extremely rare Union, Ohio State Seal Militia button (Alberts OH1/ Tice OH200) that was worn during the American Civil War by a small number of Ohio officers. This pendant is NOT an actual Civil-War period artifact!! These buttons would have been found on a few officers' uniform coats among the many different military regiments that served from Ohio during the Civil War. As with other States that fought in the American Civil War, most State Seal and Coat of Arms accoutrements and buttons worn by militia units of their prospective States were produced before the outbreak of War.  Although Ohio had a significant number of accoutrement plates that were State designated, there was surprisingly, only this lone variety of button that was utilized by Ohio military during the Civil War. This pattern was produced by Steele and Johnson in Waterbury, Connecticut around very late 1850s to possibly 1860s. The Great Seal design illustrated on the button was originally designed in 1803. The Coat of Arms design incorporates a rising sun over the hills of of Ohio and a canal boat on the water.  In the foreground are sheaves of wheat, which were meant to represent agriculture.  In the sky, above the hilltops is a bundle of arrows. The Great Seal design is partially superimposed on a lined background.
All details of this button's design are sharp and crisp in the execution of the silver pendant replica. The bail on this pendant is uniquely crafted with long-term wear in mind. It has an opening that measures 3mm x 6mm in order to accommodate a very substantial chain. In addition, the bail has my signature, hinge mechanism.
